A gathering place for readers, writers, and other advocates for a more just world

l loved the movie We Bought a Zoo with Matt Damon (okay, I love Matt Damon, too!). This New York Times reviewer is not quite as enthusiastic [NYTimes online review] but doesn’t heavily bash it, either.

My favorite quote is what Matt Damon’s character, Benjamin, tells his son, You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.

That quote makes me wonder what great things might happen if we took that literally. It takes less than twenty seconds to say “I love you” or “No, I won’t do that.”  I’ll be looking for those situations that compel  me to use my twenty seconds. Please share with us what happened when you were “insanely courageous.”

  2. That is a fantastic story of the value of courage, Peggy! I wish I had one that good to share.

  3. I wanted to join a hiking club, but hesitated because it meant spending the day with people I didn’t know. Would I like them? Would I be able to keep up with them? Would there parts of the mountain that would be difficult to climb. I drove to the back of the parking lot where we were supposed to meet. A group gathered several yards away. I gathered all my courage, stepped out of my car and went on that hike. That was about 15 years ago. Since that time I’ve climbed all of the 46 peaks in the Adirondack Mountains and have made some of my best friends through hiking.

    • I loved your story, Peggy, and I love the writing of Kahlil Gibran, especially in “The Prophet.” Here’s a quote for those who write (or teach or do any kind of work that gives something to others): “Work is love made visible.”
